Urban art in Florence

October 1, 2018

A friend once told me that Florence seemed like an open-air museum. This is true, in the city of the Renaissance where art is breathed, you will find majestic buildings, museums with world-famous works, churches with wonderful frescoes and streets that delight the eye of urban art lovers. There is art for all tastes.

Personally, I really like urban art and on my last trip to Florence, I saw works that gave a more alternative air to the city. I don’t know how long they will last, but I saw the most beautiful works in the Oltrarno area (on the other side of the Arno river), when I was walking down from Piazzale Michelangelo to Palazzo Pitti. But you have to pay close attention to walls and traffic signs to find some of the works of urban artists, that I want to show you in this post.

Blub

The works of this mysterious Florentine artist were the ones I found the most in the streets of Florence. Since 2013 they began to appear in Oltrarno and its creator has only revealed that he is from Tuscany, but his identity remains a mystery. With him or her, you will find a more fun version of the classic paintings or famous people, all with a blue background, bubbles and diving masks. I advise you to walk along Via dei Renai to see works by Blub and Clet.

Clet

To find those, you have to pay close attention to the traffic signs, since they are tiny. The truth is that I found some of them only until I saw the pictures on my laptop. In my ignorance, when I saw the signs at first, I didn’t know whose they were, I thought that the same City Council of Florence had painted them like this to give them an artistic touch. But later, when I was gone, I read that they are from the French artist Clet Abraham, who modifies the signs with decorative vinyl and does some amazing work.

Others I found out there

I also discovered these works in Oltrarno, but I don’t know from what artists they are. I was looking for information and found nothing, but I still share the photos. If you happen to know who the artists are, I would appreciate if you could tell me in the comments section ;-).

And in Venice I also found… Guerrilla Spam

I know that this little post is about Florence, but I wanted to share this one that I found in Venice, “Venezia Land” by the artist Guerrilla Spam, where he criticizes tourism.

I would have loved to know more and look for more works in the streets, but there is so much to see in Florence; at one same point you find yourself in front of a Brunelleschi building, a spectacular square, beautiful streets but full of tourists, that there comes a point in which it is difficult to concentrate on everything and especially to focus on urban art, which is sometimes very discreet.

I was so excited seeing the Duomo, and on that same street at the other end, the Piazza Santissima Annunziata which is beautiful, that I didn’t notice that there was a work by Clet, which I point to with an arrow. Photo © Silvia Lucero

There are many emotions that Florence arouses in you, that’s why I wanted to share at least some photos and pass you the hint, so that when you travel to this wonderful city, you can also walk in the footsteps of the urban artists who are transforming the streets of the capital of Tuscany.
